August 2014 - Newsletter 5/6 - Vuelta special

Dear Climbbybiker, dear #Name#,

After a boring Tour de France, the Vuelta looks more promising than ever. Fallen stars Froome and Contador will try to make Quintana, Valverde and Rodriguez life very difficult. If they stay on their bike. Riders like Kelderman, Gesink, Moreno, Pinot, Vandenbroek, Evans and Talansky will go for the top 10. Other participants? Cancellare, Degenkolb, Martin, Boonen, Cavendish,... you name it. Many trying to make up for a missed, failed or avoided Tour.

Enjoy!

Vuelta España discover all climbs

As before, the Vuelta 2014 offers lots of opportunities to climbers and attackers. The Picos de Europe will probably be the decisive arena for this year's Vuelta with famous climbs like the Lagos de Covadonga, Alto de Cobertoria, San Lorenzo, El Cordal and the Farrapona. Or will the Puerto de Ancares in the Sierras with the same name be all-decisive on the penultimate day?

Vélomédiane C. Criquiélion

From the Ardennees villages La Roche en Ardenne starts the Cyclosportive Vélomédiane Claudy Criquiélion on 30-08-2014. If you're looking for some heightmeters near the end of the summer, this is the place-to-be. 21 côtes await you in the Ardens, the Belgian Walloon cycling region, also home to Liège-Bastogne-Liège. All together good for 3300 heightmeters over 170 km.

Climb of the month: Lagos de Covadonga

In the Spanish Asturias and the Picos de Europa lies one of Spain more famous climbs, the Lagos de Covadonga, or Covadonga's lake. The roads into the Picos de Europa are no real mountain passes. They kind of point inwards towards the centre of the national park and back out. So they feel like country lanes, rather than the motorways that go over a lot of mountain passes and traffic is no hinder. Perfect for cyclists.

Story of the month: Pilot Mountain (NC - US)

Story by Greg from Durham, NC:

Climbed up this scenic mountain on a surprisingly cool Sunday in early August. Started at about 9:30am to let some of the fog clear out, and passed only a handful of cars and *zero* other bikes- for the most part, had the road completely to myself. Traffic started coming a little more steadily by 11:00 or so, so it's probably a good idea to ... read on
