The Col de l'Aspin connects the valley of the Neste d'Aure with those of the Adour. This way you will reach the Route des Cols and Bagneres-de-Bigorre.
It is also the most appropriate route from the east to reach the foot of the Tourmalet in Sainte-Marie-de-Campan
For this reason, the Col de l'Aspin's often done in the Tour de Fance.
The Col de 'Aspin is actually a "runner" and a lot easier than his reputation may predict. From Arreau take the D918 after about 200 meters. After two easy kilometers, the climb gets a little harder, but this is only temporary, because until Aspin-Aure gradients remain very human.
Note that five major switchbacks make that wind conditions during the col can change constantly.
After the wide bend near Aspin-Aure, where, if you ride with slower companions you get a good overview of the situation behind you, the climb becomes steeper. You keep on climbing however with a view of the beautiful surroundings and that's what makes the Aspin so attractive.
Faster than expected you reach the top of the col where you have to watch out for accrued cows and other animals. Nice, fairly easy climb and therefore a must for everyone.
The Col de l'Aspin is situated in Midi-Pyrenees. This climb belongs to the Pyrenees.
Starting from Arreau,
the Col de l'Aspin ascent is 12 km long. Over this distance, you climb 779 heightmeters.
